Ranks

Similar to occupations in our world, Ranks in As’dra are based on two factors: family status, and occupation. Promotions and demotions are large events and less frequent than one might expect.

Currently, each realm can host a maximum of 60 residents in total.
  1. A capital city may have a maximum of 15 adults (those two years and older) and 5 youths.
  2. A settlement may have a maximum of 15 adults (those two years and older) and 5 youths.
  3. Realms, outside of a capital city and settlement, may have an additional maximum of 15 adults (those two years and older) and 5 youths.
  4. Vagabonds do not have a hard limit of slots, but as per player rule, a player may only have two active Vagabonds at a time.
Positions are subjected to expansion with the growth of realms.

Disclaimer: While ranks may be based on ancient cultures, they may not be historically accurate in nature due to Fernweh’s fictional nature.

Noble Families

Every city has families that have influenced the realms for generations — or perhaps, have usurped another from their rightful place with the favor of another official. These influential families are known by all within, their names whispered on the wind, and depending on their reach, could even traverse into the ears of their neighbors. These families are regarded as Noble Families.

Each city — capital and settlement — has a current limit of 2 Royalborn and 3 Highborn noble families. The noble families are required to have open adoptables, may be called “canon” due to their historic relation, and must remain active to retain their favor with appropriate leadership.

Royalborn families are the two families that the Primary and Secondary leaders descend from, with exception possible if there is a former Royal family that retains the status in place of the Secondary, or if the Primary and Secondary leaders do not have direct relatives. Royalborn families, however, should be “like-family” types to the top two.

Highborn families are those that have excelled in ranks to climb into the Upper and Council Tiers. Ranks are most frequently inherited, and thus, these families have claimants over their respective seat for generations. It is possible to oust a highborn family, though rare, in cases of losing favor by their seat being demoted and another promoted in their place. A highborn family will retain their status, however, if they have the majority of their bloodline in numerous seats.

Citizens

Making up the bulk of every realm is her average citizen. These residents ensure the smooth operation outside of government officials. They supply the resources, aid in maintenance repairs, and continue to cultivate flourishing cultures. Citizens occupy various different jobs that a player may customize to fit best for their character; you can be anything from a beach bum to tradesmith.

Merchants are of their own category. Often hailing from a specific realm and cultivating wares from those places to traverse and trade with others across the realm, and sometimes even internationally, these merchants are constantly on their feet. Their trades are important to keep any realm breathing, as certain supplies are rarer in areas than others.

Some merchants also work together, forming caravans.

Examples of additional jobs for character creation: Soldier/Guard, Jewelsmith, Doctor, Babysitter/Nanny, Teacher, Repairman.

Sponsoring

Sponsoring is the act of taking in an individual — who may or may not already be apart of the Realm already — with the intentions of mentoring them in life within the Realm (city or settlement) that may differ from their life prior, or mentoring the individual in a skill that they are interested in acquiring.

A sponsor may be any individual that has resided in the realm for at least six months of time, with the exception of new foundations and rank (those upper tier and above are automatically trusted with this responsibility). Citizen tier and lower may only sponsor one individual at a time, with exceptions possible through permission of a leadership tier. Those above may take a maximum of three.

Sponsorship can earn a vagabond or individual formerly pledged to another realm citizenship over a course of time within their new residency. It is expected that all new residences undertake this to ensure their integration into society.

Those accepting a request for sponsorship will be liable for their ward.

Inheritance

In As’dra it is important for families to maintain status — or extend their prestige with further branches or advancement in power. Inheritance is a practice often used to ensure their prestige remains with their family name. Though blood relations are often preferred over that of adoption, it is not uncommon for noble families to adopt skilled individuals to ensure their family legacy continues through name and rank.

As’dra operates with bloodlines having claimants on ranks. These claimants follow the rule of eldest to youngest child, then oldest sibling to youngest sibling of the (former) holder in question.

Regardless of the rank, be it leadership, upper or citizen, it is practice for a family to denote their Heir that will take over the family “business” so to speak. This Heir is expected to inherit the rank their parent held once they reach of age and their parent either passes or retires. This cycle is the norm, but can be broken by leadership changes seeking their allies in closer position over that of tradition.
