En Caelora was built initially as a fortress to deal with pirates in the Summer Sea, and quickly grew into a community of mages sharing secrets among each other. Raekmore Academy was born under the eaves of En Caelora, and the town is very proud of its history. Though there are more than a few pirates who walk its streets these days, it remains a staunch guardian against further incursions from beyond the sea. According to those who live here, En Caelora encompasses the whole of Farryn's Isle, and the only land that properly holds that name is the smaller islet to the south. For most on the mainland, however, En Caelora refers to the fortress only. The city being built initially as a fortress has left it riddled with secret passages and escape tunnels. There are those who find themselves traversing corridors that are between the walls of other buildings, and extensive libraries both hidden and not are found around every corner. With the Academy, En Caelora boasts a large number of travelers and a larger number of magic users, which colors the way they look at people. Locals can be quite unfriendly to outsiders and even to students of the Raekmore Academy, as their nature encourages them to speak more with each other.
Rakmore Academy has functioned as a school for magick for as long as magick has existed in As'dra. Founded in a time when the gifts of Yggdrasil were rare and less understood, a collective of those hunted for their abilities settled onto Farryn's Isle and built their fortress, where they could learn and teach in peace. High walls and fortified towers loom over the cliffside looking over the northernmost half of Farryn's Isle, but the bulk of Raekmore has tunneled into the plateau beneath it, and perhaps farther. The true expanse of them is unknown though, as exploring the deeper tunnels has been banned for over a decade, for fear of a tunnel collapse leading to a sinkhole that would destroy the entire fortress. Even moreso than a place of magick and knowledge, Raekmore is the home of secrets--markings in the hallways that the scholars of Raekmore have debated for decades, secret doors and hidden or lost rooms constantly found and lost again within its halls. Filled with classrooms, lecture halls, private offices and even personal quarters, with no clear logic to the arrangement of these rooms, every jaunt through the Academy has the potential to end in adventure, and while the occupied areas of Raekmore are well-maintained, there are enough dark shadows and abandoned corners for each student to be taught to tread with caution.
